What is CELPIP?

CELPIP or Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program is a hearing, reading, writing, and speaking competence assessment tool for English language learners. Paragon Testing Enterprises administers the test. The University of British Columbia has a subsidiary (UBC). Paragon is the only organisation in Canada that provides certified English proficiency examinations for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).The CELPIP Test enables test takers to demonstrate their English proficiency. The examination evaluates a test taker’s English abilities in a number of everyday circumstances, including conversing with coworkers and superiors at work, engaging with friends, comprehending newscasts, and interpreting and responding to written materials.

The CELPIP Tests are the most widely used general English tests in Canada for immigration and professional certification. They include:

There are two versions of the CELPIP test available. You can choose between the two types. Make sure you know the version of the test you’ll be taking.

1. CELPIP General Test 

It is used to assess a test taker’s English speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills, and it is used to apply for permanent residence and professional designations. The time allotted for the test is three hours. It takes about 3 hours to complete the sitting, and it can be completed in one sitting with no separate speaking session. PR Status has been approved by the IRCC. The IRCC has authorised the CELPIP – General test for Permanent Residency applications. The fees/cost for taking this test is $280 + taxes in Canada. The price may differ in other countries. 

2. CELPIP General LS Test

This test is available only in Canada. It assesses a test taker’s English speaking and listening abilities and is used for citizenship and professional designation applications. It takes around an hour to complete and can be completed in one sitting without the need for a separate speaking session. The IRCC has authorised the CELPIP – LS test for Canadian citizenship applications. The fees/cost for taking this test is $195+ taxes in Canada and this might differ in other countries.
